IDEA4RC: Intelligent Ecosystem to improve the management of rare cancers

ABSTRACT
A data space for the governance, the sharing and the reuse of existing multi-source health data.

Where: international
Challenge
Rare cancers management suffers from data scarcity, heterogeneity (e.g. of languages, standards, formats), dispersion and restrictions from data providers (e.g. hospitals) due to data sensitivity and protection.
Approach

Hence, the need to create a framework for a European ad-hoc data ecosystem, encompassing multiple sources in multiple EU countries and supported by:

  • A federation of interoperability 'capsules' based on FHIR APIs
  • AI tools for multi-language data processing and analysis,
  • A multimodal data navigator to assist clinicians and researchers in finding and accessing available data of stipulated quality
  • Modern trust-building technologies (e.g. blockchain) to orchestrate data governance and incentivise data sharing and altruism.
Digital Ecosystem
Solution
Digital Ecosystem

The IDEA4RC project extends HL7 FHIR concepts to a distributed data sharing environment by: realising a set of AI-tools ensuring interoperability and access to structured data from different sources, leveraging novel AI approaches for achieving multi-lingual Natural Language Processing (NLP) to allow data extraction and standardization of unstructured data (e.g. text), data interpretation and datasets integration, implementing a data governance facilitating the negotiation of relevant data sharing agreements, the collection of patient consent and the enforcement of accountability.

Engineering is responsible for the design and implementation of the data integration flow from heterogeneous sources and the interface for defining patient cohorts based on HL7 FHIR standards. Engineering is also involved in the development of the platform enabling the use of predictive models based on artificial intelligence.

The project has received funding from the EU Horizon 2020 (contract no. 101057048).
