BeFlexible: cross-sector services and interoperable platforms for smart grid operations

Boosting energy stakeholder engagement and cooperation to increase energy flexibility.

Where: international
Challenge
The increase of renewable energy sources is profoundly impacting electricity markets and the demand for system flexibility, as well as the business models of traditional utilities and distribution companies. This requires rethinking the way power sector markets are designed and operated.
Approach
The recent clean energy legislation requires electricity markets to consider active citizens participation, as well as the creation of energy communities. BeFlexible aims to increase the energy flexibility by improving cooperation between Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and Transmission System Operators (TSOs), and facilitate the participation of all stakeholders involved.
Solution
BeFlexible defines a new concept of common cross-sector data space, in which a series of interoperable digital platforms and innovative energy services are implemented and integrated. The project includes the design of a Grid Data and Business Network (GDBN) and the definition of a system architecture to ensure full data interoperability and to enable the creation of new business models providing additional value to meet consumers’ needs in compliance with a stable regulatory framework. Engineering is responsible for the design and definition of the BeFlexible Common Data Space Architecture and supports the Italian Demo partners in the implementation and integration of the pilot in the city of Rome. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme under Grant Agreement nº 101075438.
