Control Systems for a Driverless Subway in Copenhagen

ABSTRACT
Collaborating with Leonardo and Salini Impregilo, our expert team designed and implemented advanced monitoring and control systems for Cityringen, the new driverless M3 metro line in the city of Copenhagen.

Where: denmark
Challenge
Named after its circular shape, Cityringen is the new driverless metro line of the city of Copenhagen. A construction based on innovation and cutting-edge technology, Cityringen consists of 17 stations, 5 shafts for emergency escapes and 1 depot. The new M3 line supports the existing M1 and M2 lines and answers to the growing need for global mobility in Copenhagen, a capital which continues to expand at an exponential rate.
Approach
Engineering, with established expertise delivering technology solutions and services to other leading European metro lines, was called in to support the development of M3 line's infrastructure, delivering a robust solution fitting the challenging context and adhering to stringent performance and safety requirements at the same time.

Solution
Digital Ecosystem
Engineering's project team developed a customized software solution to monitor and control field devices for each peripheral site. The solution is based on hardware products belonging to ControlLogix PLC area, provided by Rockwell, a leader in the field of automation. The peripheral hardware and software systems we developed were then integrated by our team with the central SCADA monitoring system, enabling operators to efficiently and easily manage the metro line. We also ensured the security of our software by developing it according to methodologies compliant to SIL1 safety standards as defined by the current European railway regulations.
