DEDALUS: Technologies for Demand Response in the Energy Sector with a Social Approach

DEDALUS designs, develops, and demonstrates advanced Demand Response (DR) technologies at various levels (apartments, buildings, districts), with the support of social and humanistic sciences to encourage their adoption.

Where: international
Challenge
European households, responsible for approximately 27.4% of total energy consumption, often generate demand peaks with their residential loads. Utility companies must therefore increase production to ensure stability and prevent supply interruptions. Flexible demand-side consumption management can play a key role.
Approach
The use of residential DR can reduce dependence on fossil fuel power plants and facilitate the integration of renewable energies into the electrical grid, improving its stability and management. DEDALUS develops a social, technological, and business framework to promote flexible consumption by residents, supporting various energy scenarios and strengthening community interactions.
Solution

The solution involves developing flexibility models, blockchain/smart contracts for flexibility services, along with nudging tools to engage residents in DR services by providing concrete suggestions on flexible behaviors to adopt. The project utilizes tools and methodologies from cognitive and social sciences to facilitate the application of sustainable and responsible behaviors in the energy sector and explores and validates new business models for the sharing economy and social innovation. Engineering coordinates the project and is responsible for implementing the Digital Twin, interoperability aspects, and Energy Data Space.

The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe programme - Contract No. 101103998.
