Challenge
The growing market demand in the clinical practise of Digital Pathology has led Engineering to study and implement an ecosystem for pathological anatomy that supports the physicians in their operations. This was possibile thanks to the collaboration of AOU San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona - Scuola Medica Salernitana - UOC Anatomia Patologica.
Approach
An innovative integrated system that combines the Pathological Anatomy software with components such as the viewer for digitised slides, Artificial Intelligence algorithms or augmented reality to support the pathologist operativeness.The aim is to make the pathologist's work more efficient and accurate by automating some tasks and integrating heterogeneous data by digitising the process to provide globally comparable results and give meaning to the data from a diagnostic and research perspective.
The solution has addressed the needs discussed with clinicians, and the pathology laboratory workflow had several benefits from the Engineering ecosystem. These include the integration and interoperability between WinSAP, the viewer, and the AI system, the improvement of the diagnosis process, the facilitation of second opinion activities, and the possibility of remote diagnostic processes. The use of AI algorithms in laboratory processes makes operations more efficient. Patients can benefit from faster response times and more accurate diagnoses. The ability to offer the service in a modular and exposed manner as SaaS on AWS cloud provides everyone to leverage Engineering services to explore the benefits of AI in pathology. The AR component, finally, optimizes some operations and facilitates the simultaneous performance of tasks, improving efficiency, time, and pathologist autonomy.
