Luiss and Engineering: new chair in "AI & Climate Change"

The first innovative academic course at the European level on the opportunities of Artificial Intelligence to address climate change. The collaboration between the university and the Italian digital group is strengthened.

A chair that will unite Artificial Intelligence and climate change to strengthen the green and tech skills needed to tackle the complexities of a rapidly changing environmental and social ecosystem. With this goal, Luiss Guido Carli University and Engineering, a leader in digitalization processes for businesses and Public Administrations, are establishing, starting from the next academic year, the chair in “AI & Climate Change”.

The new academic course will train, for the first time in Italy and Europe, profiles capable of applying the potential of Artificial Intelligence to environmental challenges, particularly concerning climate emergency prevention and management, optimization of infrastructures, including water systems, and developing strategies to analyze and mitigate ecological impacts on ecosystems. The development of such skills will become increasingly central in the job market, both for Public Administrations and companies across all sectors.

Engineering, which has made ESG policies a fundamental pillar of its growth strategy, thus reaffirms its commitment to environmental sustainability through the use of digital and new technologies, and will leverage this collaboration to strengthen the group's research and development activities.

For Luiss, the new chair represents a further testament to its commitment to sustainability, which has allowed the university to rank 15th in the world and 1st in the “Energy and Climate Change” category in the latest World University UI GreenMetric Ranking.

As stated by Luiss Rector Paolo Boccardelli: “With this initiative, which represents one of the most advanced and innovative training paths on digital and green transition in Europe, with a prestigious partner and leader in digitalization like Engineering, we aim both to meet the high demand for skills in these sectors from businesses and to carry out research projects aimed at raising awareness about technologies and practices, both business and institutional, that contribute to overcoming the immense challenge of climate change.”

Engineering CEO Maximo Ibarra added: “The main challenge for the future of our planet is the management of climate change and its related impacts. In this context, Artificial Intelligence along with other frontier technologies can play a crucial role in mitigating climate change, optimizing natural resources, and promoting sustainable practices. Engineering is deeply committed to research and development activities to continually update products and solutions for the market. Academic collaboration plays an important role in the Group's R&D strategies; in Italy, we have relationships with several universities. With Luiss, we have decided to establish a new chair with a curriculum aimed at Italian and international faculty and students to prepare professionals with new skills, specialized in AI and climate change, ready to support the sustainable development of the country and businesses.

The Chair in “AI & Climate Change” further consolidates the partnership between Luiss and Engineering on innovation-related topics and confirms the university’s focus on digital and climate change issues.
