The project aims to improve the security of citizens, with respect to cyber and physical threats, by adopting a Community Policing approach.

Where: italy
Challenge
Community Policing is a collaborative approach involving law enforcement, public authorities and citizens to identify and address local issues. This approach - where incidents can be reported both by IoT devices and by citizens, acting as human sensors - implies socio-technological challenges, related to: Community partnership; Organisational transformation; Problem solving.
Approach
The project introduces innovative security and cyber threat intelligence services. This involves staying ahead of potential threats through the search and analysis of relevant information on the internet, including the deep web and dark net. Furthermore, the project employs predictive models to anticipate significant security events, enhancing overall community safety.
Solution
In Smartsense, the Community Policing approach is implemented through: - the use of mobile apps for citizens and dashboards for Public Authorities and Law Enforcement Control Rooms - stream processing to analyze the huge amount of incoming data - information fusion and correlation to identify complex threat scenarios - analysis of interdependencies and of the potential cascading effects to manage the urban system as an interconnected system of systems - development of a dashboard and visual analytics for timely and understandable assessments to first responders and decision makers. Engineering plays a central role, being involved in all these modules.
