LAGO: Lessen data Access and Governance Obstactles

Delivering the foundation for a trusted European Research Data Ecosystem (RDE) to address the ‘Data Issue’ in the research landscape for the fight against crime and terrorism.

Where: international
Challenge
Evaluating the shortage of qualitatively and quantitatively adequate datasets to support research in the fight against organized crime and terrorism (FCT) represents a significant barrier to innovating techniques, platforms, and tools made available to law enforcement agencies.
Approach
LAGO will address the data issue in the FCT research landscape by building an evidence-based and validated multi-actor reference architecture for a trusted EU FCT Research Data Ecosystem (RDE). To this purpose, LAGO fosters and innovate data-oriented research collaboration among LEAs, security practitioners, relevant EU agencies, academic and industry researchers, policy makers and regulators.
Solution

LAGO creates a multi-actor Reference Architecture to facilitate depositing, sharing, and co-creating data and tools for FCT research. Built on design principles like decentralization, data sovereignty, data quality, trust and transparency, it aligns with EU values on data protection and ethics. The project aims to innovate FCT data-oriented research by laying foundations for sustainable, safe, and trusted practices for training and testing datasets.

Engineering is the project coordinator, leads the definition of the Reference Architecture and the Implementation Framewok bringing relevant GAIA-X knowledge and expertise. Engineering also leads the Data Catalog implementation.

The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme - Contract No. 101073951.
