HYPERRIDE: hybrid provision of energy based on reliability and resiliency

Our research project to contribute to the successful roll-out of new infrastructure concepts throughout Europe.

Where: international
Challenge
Because of technical deficiencies of Direct Current (DC) equipment, Alternating Current (AC) systems are preferred in modern power systems. However, DC is having a comeback for devices: low-voltage DC systems are common in telco, datacentres and industrial installations. Another driver is the deployment of renewable energies, as PV, which is DC based.
Approach
By following a technology and infrastructure-driven approach, HYPERRIDE aims to provide both technical and business solutions for implementing DC and hybrid AC/DC distribution grids with Low Voltage (LV) and/or Medium Voltage (MV) connection.
Solution
On one hand, the project provides a layer-based control architecture for future hybrid grids that enables a stable grid operation even under failure situations or cyber-attack scenarios; on the other hand, it moves toward effective business models ready to facilitate investments in the sector and reducing the costs of integration of local generation. Within the project, Engineering is engaged in developing an open and secure ICT platform for optimizing the operation of modular and resilient hybrid AC/DC grids; the platform involves a cyber-security and fault detection layer and an IoT sensing and monitoring layer. The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme - Contract No. 957788
