e-SAFE: energy and seismic affordable renovation solutions

Challenge
Residential and non-residential buildings currently account for 40% of the EU's energy demand and approximately 36% of all greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). As a result, building renovation plays a pivotal role in achieving the EU's decarbonization and energy efficiency goals.
Approach
The retrofit system proposed by e-SAFE involves the energy-efficient and seismic renovation of buildings without compromising internal comfort. This approach also considers factors such as the building's aesthetics, as well as achieving cost and time savings, to promote its widespread adoption.
Solution
The e-SAFE building renovation system is based on the combination of both technological and process innovation. It is achieved through an iterative process based on a multidisciplinary methodology, where traditional modeling and experimental research are integrated with tools for the economic and financial feasibility, the co-production of knowledge, mutual learning and public engagement. Engineering oversees the implementation of the ICT infrastructure, with a pivotal role in delivering the Decision Support System (e-DSS). The e-DSS is designed to assist technicians in making informed decisions regarding the optimal solutions for seismic and energy improvements. The project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme - Contract No. 893135
