Research Project

DEMETER: field data for Smart Agriculture

ABSTRACT
Building an innovative, interoperable platform, based on IoT and Big Data, to support sustainable farming and food production systems.

Where: international
Challenge
European agriculture still lacks a common repository where data generated by IoT devices can be stored by equipment and production systems. Players already use their own proprietary data spaces, leveraging data for decision-making, quality control and monitoring of the production chain. However, these solutions are not interoperable, forcing users to adopt a variety of different systems.
Approach
The DEMETER project aims to accelerate the spread of smart, data-based solutions for agriculture that can support decision-making and monitoring. For this reason, the beneficiaries are not only farmers, but also service advisors and ICT providers. Engineering is the technical coordinator of the project, which involves 60 partner organisations. The project has received co-funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme - Contract No. 720714
Solution
DEMETER adopts a human-in-the-loop model that combines human knowledge and expertise with digital information, it focuses on interoperability thanks to Digital Enabler, and employs a variety of technologies: IoT, Earth Observation, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence. The DEMETER solution is being demonstrated through 20 pilot projects on more than 5700 farms across Europe, covering a wide spectrum of sub-sectors: arable crops, irrigated crops, fruit production, livestock. In particular, as part of a pilot project in the dairy value chain, we are implementing a decision support system that provides farmers with an integrated view of animal welfare and suggests corrective actions. Including a blockchain-based traceability system that collects data across the supply chain, from production to labelling of the final product.
