GOTHAM: for a better water management in the Mediterranean

We co-created a tool that enables a more accurate groundwater control to preserve the quantity and quality of water in the Mediterranean basin.

Approach & Solution

Approach

The Mediterranean basin has been identified as one of the world’s basins most at risk due to climate and anthropogenic changes. The GOTHAM project takes up the challenge of water depletion due to conflicting use.

To overcome this water stress, the decision process of groundwater governance models, currently charachterized by doubts at each decision level and where there is no exchange of information between different agents, must be changed.

In this sense, there is a need for a tool capable of allowing data exchange between the different stakeholders and water users and of integrating this highly valuable information in groundwater governance decisions.

Solution

The GOTHAM project aims at creating a water management tool to tackle groudwater scarcity around the Mediterranean basin. The GOTHAM Tool (Gtool) will be designed under the consensus of all the actors (regulators, end-water users, water producers and suppliers, NGOs, community groups from Spain, Lebanon, Jordan) and will use a big data analytical system for a new groundwater management framework based on users.

Engineering is responsible for the overall architecture design of the tool, the development of its Data Layer and Service Layers and its integration and deployment on the cloud infrastructure for the project’s case studies.

GOTHAM is part of the PRIMA Programme supported by the European Union under Horizon 2020. Grant Agreement number: 1922.
